Sounds of Cinecittà (vol. 1) (29)
Quartet Records is proud to present SOUNDS OF CINECITTÀ, a collection of 6 CDs comprising nine obscure but oft-requested Italian scores from the Silver Age period of the ’60s and ’70s—undoubtedly the most fertile years of a unique cinematographic style that was admired and loved around the world.

The Italian Silver Age was also an incredibly prolific and immensely popular era of film scoring that gave us the likes of Ennio Morricone, Bruno Nicolai, Piero Piccioni, Riz Ortolani, Armando Trovajoli, Stelvio Cipriani, Carlo Rustichelli, Piero Umiliani, Francesco De Masi, Luis Bacalov, Carlo Savina and Guido & Maurizio De Angelis, among many others. The 1960s and ’70s boasted an unmistakable flair for memorable tunes, great thematic variations and scores that could work exceptionally well on an album, away from their respective films. In fact, the large number of great scores tied to barely known movies has become the bane of soundtrack producers as there are so many wonderful scores that go unheard due to the relative obscurity of the pictures or the composers. Even if we were to release three or four titles each month, it would be decades before we could close the book on the great archives of Italian film music.

For this reason, Quartet Records aims to speed up the process and offer it at a reasonable price with its new collection of multi-CD sets dedicated to the Italian Silver Age. The aim of this project is to release rich, thematically connected box sets, each featuring scores that may be a hard sell on their own—but which should be more enticing when given a deluxe “bulk discount.” This first such collection includes a great variety of genres and composers—from marital dramas and comedies through horror and heist movies to the family film VERSO L’AVVENTURA, featuring commercially underrepresented composers such as Daniele Patucchi, Gian Piero Reverberi, Teo Usuelli, Gino Peguri, Romano Mussolini, Carlo Pes, Peppino de Luca, Gregorio García Segura and Fred Bongusto. What all the scores included have in common is a strong romantic and lounge vibe, so characteristic of Italian soundtracks of those years.

Some scores are either previously unreleased or, if there have been any prior digital releases, significantly expanded. Others have only been previously released on LP (CARA SPOSA, EUTANASIA DI UN AMORE, IL DEBITO CONIUGALE) or, like IL DIVORZIO, in an obscure Japanese edition decades ago.

This collection has been produced by Claudio Fuiano and painstakingly mastered by Chris Malone from the original master tapes. The package includes a richly illustrated 28-page full-color booklet with an in-depth essay by the late and much missed Gergely Hubai, who had worked hard on this project for several months. We hope to release more boxes with so many treasures if this initial release does well.

I don´t know what really happened on the 1969 comedy film IL TRAPIANTO which is on CD 2, but an original score had been written by Carlo Rustichelli as the manuscript (with cues M1-M55) exists in the Rustichelli estate which is now housed at the Biblioteca Luigi Chiarini in Rome:
https://bibliochiarini.sebina.it/opac/resource/il-trapianto/CSC0218689

On Youtube - and even in the film´s main title credits - the song "Ricordi--ricordi" is credited to Rustichelli and the uploader writes that the Spanish composer Gregorio Garcia Segura was only named for contractual reasons in the film and that the complete score had in fact been written by Rustichelli:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9qRiWPiPKA

When I listen to the sound clips on the Quartet website, it seems to me that at least partly this should be true: The beginning of Track 6 "Sacral beat" is unmistakeably by Rustichelli and by no one else and also for example track 14 "Coro swing" has some typical Rustichelli trademarks which are easily identifiable.

This looks like an amazing grab bag bargain of a set premiering so many obscure scores on CD. I’m not sure we’ve gotten anything remotely like this since LLL’s Paramount Western set. It’s like the Lukas Kendall philosophy (i.e. TV Omnibus, MGM Treasury, all those western sets) is back and I love it!

I agree with you Stefan, I just watched the movie on youtube and the music definitely has some typical Rustichelli trademarks, for example the way the (electric) organ is used - pure Rustichelli! Also, the "Italianness" of the music in general. The film contains a nice Deguello for trumpet and guitar in the style of Tiomkin and I hope it made it onto the CD.

Let's say that 80% of the score was composed by Rustichelli (who was only credited on the song) and 20% by García Segura. But all this is clearly explained in the liner notes.

Ever since Music Box Records came up with the idea of gathering wonderful and unusual French scores written by less than best selling composers and releasing them in box sets called B.O. INTROUVABLES, I wondered why the same couldn't be done with Italian composers. B.O. INTROUVABLES are constant sellouts (although it takes a bit of time) and they are on volume 6 and, if you can find them, the first one goes for over $100, the second $75 and the third heading toward $50. Congrats on Quartet for filling the need. I am grabbing this.

I won't hold my breath for an American version.

Mikael, I don´t think that this "Deguello" track will be on the Quartet CD as it has quite obviously not been composed for IL TRAPIANTO, but has just been recycled from Rustichell´s former 1964 score SEDOTTA E ABBANDONATA where it was the track "Alla deguello" and was a kind of conscious parody of the Tiomkin music.

Endless italian obsessions continues...

Your opinion.....

Italian cinema is the most wonderful, versatile, human, real, expressive, dramatic.

Its place is at the pantheon of movie industry, and its technicians are top professionals.

This is another labor of love from Quartet so we must be VERY grateful for that.

We need more italian obessions !

Remarkable work of preservation of Italian film music.

thanks Quartet !

Jose

Okay, thank you for clarifying, Jose.

You can listen to it here:

Yes indeed, you're right Stefan, thanks for the info. I do have Sedotta e Abbandonata on CD but it's been a while since since I listened to it. I had completely forgotten about this track.

By the way, I have just noticed that a part of the "Dicerie" track from SEDOTTA E ABBANDONATA is even reused twice in the TRAPIANTO movie (at 1:20:36 and at 1:30:07 in the Youtube version).

Great releases, I am familiar with almost every score from the online releases and LP.

I hope these ones make it to the next volumes as only the low-quality MP3-like versions can be found on Itunes.
